    H B P

Had a look at league stats .... wondering out loud why the HBP is up so dramatically in the last three years.  Changed from about 75 per year to over 100 per year ?  Any theories ?

Could be two things, guys are more comfortable at the dish since they've been playing for more years now (will step inside).  I don't know it seems as if hitters now are daring the pitchers to run it in.  It seems that way when I'm on the mound.  Zak and Vent are notorious for standing over the plate.  I'm sure we can come up with others.  Also with a guy like me throwing, if I miss I'm sure guys will take it.  I don't hurt that much.  Rocco hurts, I dont.

Well ... The Kid  HBP in last three years 0,0,1 - total of one.  Previous three years - 1,0,1 - total of two.

.............Zak   HBP in last three years 0,2,2 - total of four ...Previous three years - 2, , - total of two.

Combined in the last three years HBP - five Previous three years - four with zak missing two years stats.

Now we, the Padres, did have Tynan but only this year.

Looking at this years stats, over half the league was hit once (50 of 90 players), with the top being Tynan and Lipson.  We should ask them what's going through their minds before the plunk.

Well, as for me, I've just always liked to crowd the plate.  Being a lefty, we usually like the inside stuff, so I figure the closer I get to the plate, the better.  Plus, by standing so close, I have very good plate coverage (which always surprises me when an ump calls an outside pitch...the way I crowd the plate, if I can't hit it, I don't think it's a strike).

As for getting hit, it's a risk I'm willing to take.  It sucks, don't get me wrong, especially when it's a hard thrower like Lipson up there.  With that being said, the amount of pitches I've faced versus the amount of times I've been hit FAR out number each other.

    Just my thoughts...

...and by the way, those stats aren't totally accurate - I mean, I got hit by Lipson 3 times in two games last year...that's pain...

Ouch, Lipson tag...that had to hurt.  I think I plunked Mookie 3 times in one game 2 years ago.  LOL

Yeah I could vouch for both you and Levy hitting me a couple of times that game. I don't crowd the plate at all but I think you two have hit me the most in the years I have been playing, Trust the same spot wice does hurt, even if it's you throwing Moncayo.

What I have seen on alot of stat sheets over the years is that guys sometimes don't know how to score a HBP, they often put BB instead.  I have seen this for many years and I know this happens as I have seen it occur in games I was playing in.  So maybe now guys are finally putting HBP on the stat sheet instead of a BB as they become better scorers ;)

     Yes Bucky,

This stands also very true. not only to mention games he pitched in and hit me personally but games he aslo attended and I also got hit while he was in attendance. So I can'tg narrow it down to just Moncayo hiting me a few times in one game cause he was going to walk me and he knows what the deal was???
